Direction (Q. 1 - 5) : Read the passage carefully and answer the questions given below it.
Desi girl is no longer desi. She has got anew attire, new style and, above all, a new attitude. She never blushes. She is not careful about selection of words either. She is our family companion every evening in the form of daily soaps. We have no option but to watch her with little kids, parents and parents-inlaw, elder brothers, sisters and friends. I just cannot bear to observe my kids ogling and, at times, imitating her. She is the other woman we have grown up to distance ourselves from. But she is everywhere, laughing at my embarrassment, knowing fully well that I too like to ogle at her in private. What do I do? Implore the broadcasters to maintain certain decency? Request the government to regulate the contents telecast on television? Neither is willing, for my definition of decency is quite different from someone else's perception of what constitutes a decent content. Self-regulation does not work, as it goes against the very spirit of gaining television rating points. Broadcasters want eyeballs which is possible only with innovative (read teasing) contents. To be fair to broadcasters, some of the recent soaps have raised relevant social issues. But social issues have been packaged in such a way that they send out confusing signals. Should we then ask the government to take the cudgel on our behalf? That is a sure recipe to stifle creativity we can ill-afford. Then what is the way out? Broadcasters should evolve a collective self-regulation code. Once that is enforced in true letter and spirit, I will have no problem watching desi girl in all her avatars even with my kids and parents. Till that happens, we will have to put up with the daily atyachaar.
